This is the story of Bruce Wayne regaining his abilities (Dr. Kinsolving, through her psychic abilities, healed his back). Even though he fully regained his physical prowess and strength, he lost the ability to use force. This was regained by re-visiting Lady Shiva, an expert in the martial arts, and a killer. Lady Shiva tested Bruce Wayne's abilities by sending many enemies against him, and was only satisfied when Bruce appeared to have killed someone, which she felt was the breaking of the man. Bruce tricked her, and then returned to reclaim the mantle of the Bat from Jean Paul Valley, who had really gone over the edge. Jean Paul Valley was no longer Batman, but neither was Bruce Wayne.
