Knightfall is a story of the breaking of the Batman, the rise of a new Batman, the perseverance of a man, and the rebirth of the Batman.

Batman has faced many opponents throughout his career: Joker, Ra's al Ghul, Riddler, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter, and Scarecrow are just a few. While Batman feels that his greatest foe has always been either the Joker or Ra's al Ghul, he suffered his greatest personal defeat at the hands of Bane. The Knightfall story was that of Bane's plan to release the inmates of Arkham Asylum, the home for the criminally insane. Batman wore himself out, physically and mentally, trying to recapture most of those criminals. Bane observed Batman throughout this time, learning as much as he could about him. At one point, Bane saw Bruce Wayne and recognized him as being Batman.

When Batman was at his weakest, Bane arrived at Wayne Manor, fought Batman, and defeated him. Bane broke Batman's back in the process, leaving him crippled. After Bane threw Batman down from a building in downtown Gotham, Batman was rescued by Alfred, Jean Paul, and Tim. Bruce Wayne felt that Batman needed to exist, so Jean Paul Valley, a young man in the employ of Wayne Enterprises, and formerly known as Azrael, took over the mantle of the Bat.
