Genesis was a recent event, and crossover, in the DC Universe. The premise is rather convoluted, as it involves a lot of the history of the DC Universe, but it kind of goes like this:
A wave of energy, the Godwave, struck out from somewhere in the universe, and as it passed planets, it created gods. When the wave reached the edge of the universe, it bounced back, and this time, as it passed planets, it created meta-humans (who because superheroes). Now that wave has returned - and in its wake, it is leaving superheroes either powerless, or changes their powers.
Darkseid has decided that he wants to use this wave to give him absolute power, so that he can take control over the universe. The Spectre has decided that this is the fight of his life; his purpose: to stop Darkseid.
Genesis was a four-part miniseries, and all DC Universe titles tied into this story. Unlike The Final Night, it was not necessary to read Genesis in order to understand the Genesis-related issues for each title.
Now, Genesis did not affect Batman and his partners (Nightwing, Robin, Azrael, Oracle, and Huntress) in a physical sense. None of them have any meta-human superpowers that could have been affected. However, the Genesis wave (kind of makes you think of Star Trek II, doesn't it? :) did have the effect of making people on Earth rather despondant. People were committing suicide, and crime was incredibly high. This gave Gotham's protectors a very high number of incidents to deal with - all this on top of fighting their own despair.
